Ithaca Sculling Competes at Seven Sisters Sculling Head Regatta!

Regatta Name: Seven Sisters Sculling Head Regatta
Location: Hadley, Massachusetts (UMass Amherst Boathouse)
Participating Schools: University of Massachusetts Amherst, Tufts, Smith & Ithaca
Condition: Foggy in the morning, however cleared up throughout the day!

This past weekend, the Women’s Varsity Sculling Team travelled to the University of Massachusetts Boathouse in Hadley, Massachusetts to compete in the Seven Sisters Sculling Head Regatta! The race was an all day event, consisting of two 5k’s, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Unlike the Head of the Genesee, where the times from the morning and afternoon are combined for one total result, both 5k’s were considered separate.

When the athletes arrived at the race course, there was a dense fog hovering over the venue and race course. As a result of this, the racing was delayed by 15 minutes, to make sure the athletes had safe enough conditions to compete. The fog did eventually clear and the conditions turned out to be fantastic and favorable for racing!

In the morning, Ithaca had four entries in three events. In the quad event, Xan O’Neill, Kellie Palladino, Rachel Brogle and Tara Malone, coxed by Lynn Smith, raced to a second place finish, completing the course in a time of 19:50.7! They were only bested by the entry from Tufts. There were two, 2x entries as well. The entry of Jennie Peterson and Delaney Pfohl completed the course in a time of 19:15.8 which was the fastest time of the morning in that category! The second entry of Rachel Dowd and Katie Ely finished 6th out of 17 entries, finishing the course in a time of 20:05.7! In the 1x event, Emily Morley rowed to a 7th place finish out of 19 entries, completing the course in a time of 21:10!

After taking a break in-between races, athletes went back out in the afternoon to compete in yet another 5k! The afternoon quad of Emily Morley, Jennie Peterson, Katie Ely and Delaney Pfohl, also coxed by Lynn Smith, completed the course in a time of 18:31! In the afternoon 2x category, Kellie Palladino and Rachel Brogle placed 5th out of 13 entries, completing the course in 20:20.5! Competing as lightweights in a category with both heavyweight and lightweight entries, they should be extremely proud of that result! The second entry of Xan O’Neill and Tara Malone placed 11th out of 13 entries, completing the course in 21:08.4. In the 1x event, Rachel Dowd placed 5th out of 14 entries and completed the course in a time of 23:07.5!

Overall, it was a very strong showing for Ithaca Sculling! Taking into account both 5k races and warm-ups, all athletes rowed a total of 22k! Ithaca showed great diversity and competitiveness by rowing in different line-ups, boats and events in the morning and afternoon! It was a long day, however Ithaca showed up to compete and they represented their Bomber Pride well!
