This past weekend, 18 current Men’s and Women’s Varsity Team members and 9 Ithaca Alumni traveled to Boston, Massachusetts to compete in one of the most prestigious regattas in the world, The Head of the Charles. Established in 1964, The Head of the Charles is the largest 2 day regatta in the world, attracting over 9,000 athletes from 36 different states and 32 different countries who compete in an estimated 1,900 boats in 61 different events. It is also estimated that more than 300,000 spectators come to the Charles River over the course of the two day regatta to watch! Needless to say, the atmosphere at this regatta is truly un-matched, and it is a unique experience for every athlete involved.
The racing for Ithaca began on Saturday, October 18th as the Women’s Alumni 8+ took to the water to compete against 41 other entries from around the United States. They had a strong race, finishing 17th out of 42 entries with a time of 18:17.40 beating entries from Williams, MIT, Wellesley, Marist, Boston College and more! Their top half finish means that they automatically qualify for next year, so look out for our Women Alumni at the Charles in 2015!
On Sunday, October 19th, the Ithaca Men’s and Women’s Varsity Boats headed out on the water to compete in the Men’s and Women’s Collegiate 8 events! The Men competed in a tough field, racing against crews such as Williams, Michigan, Hobart, Grand Valley State, Virginia and more! Starting behind Marist and ahead of Bates, they had two great crews to compete against the entire way down the course. They were able to row a strong race, and they finished 28th out of 44 entires with a time of 16:22.89. The Women had the same level of competition! They raced against crews from Bates, Trinity, Williams, William Smith and more! They looked strong throughout the entire race and were able to come in 10th place out of 30 entries with a time of 18:11.19! Overall, Ithaca had two out of the three competing boats qualify for the regatta next year! Even though the Ithaca Men did not automatically qualify for next year, the still rowed a quality race against stiff competition! Ithaca Men’s and Women’s Crew travels to Saratoga, NY next weekend to compete at the Head of the Fish! With teams such as Marist, WPI, Boston College, RIT, and Williams competing, it will be a great day of competitive racing! If you are around the area, please come and support Ithaca College Crew!
