This past weekend, the weekend of November 8th, Ithaca Men’s Varsity Crew traveled to Mercer County Park in New Jersey to participate in their last two regattas of the 2014 Fall Season. On Saturday, November 8, they participated in the Frostbite Regatta and on Sunday November 9, they participated in the Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta. Both days ran on the same racing format. Differing from a typical Fall Race, these regattas ran on a 2,000 meter sprint format, similar to the spring. In each boating category, there were flights, and only the WINNER of each flight would be awarded a medal. There were no silver or bronze medals, which made the stakes for each race much higher.

Ithaca had five boats participate in the Frostbite Regatta on Saturday. Entries consisted of one Varsity boat, two JV boats and two Frosh/Novice boats. The Freshman 8’s took to the water first. There were three flights of freshman boats scheduled for the day. The Ithaca “A” entry was set to compete in the first flight and the Ithaca “B” entry was set to compete in the third flight. The “A” entry raced to a third place finish in their flight with a time of 6:38.34. They beat crews from Delaware, Loyola and Maryland and they were only bested by Lasalle and Drexel. In the third flight, the Ithaca “B” entry raced to a fourth place finish with a time of 7:29.47, beating crews from Lafayette and Binghamton! The two JV entries competed in the Men’s Collegiate JV 8 flights. The Ithaca “A” entry earned fourth in the first flight with a time of 6:36.13, besting crews from Washington College and Lasalle. The Ithaca “B” entry raced to a third place finish with a time of 6:49.47. They had a very close race the entire way down the course with the crew from Temple, however were only bested by them by 2 seconds. The Varsity 8 finished out the day of racing, as they competed in the Men’s Collegiate Varsity 8 flight. They completed the course in a time of 6:22.46, which earned them a third place finish, besting Colgate by four seconds. Overall it was a competitive day of racing for Ithaca with some good results to show!

On Sunday at the Bill Braxton Memorial Regatta, Ithaca entered eight boats! There were three Varsity 4 entries, two Frosh/Novice 8 entries, one JV entry, one lightweight 8 entry and one Varsity 8 entry! The Varsity 4’s took to the water first in the morning. There were three flights of Varsity 4 races, and Ithaca had one entry in each of the flights! The Ithaca “B” entry of Alex Martin, Devin Dyson, J.P. Kelly and Keith MacDonald took first in their flight with a time of 6:51.52! The Ithaca “A” entry of Joey Allegra, Kevin Davie, Charlie Enright and Jake Korinko raced to a third place finish in their flight with a time of 7:09.09! Last but not least the Ithaca “C” entry of Branden George, Milo Alexandra-Young, Scott Irish-Bronkie and Taylor LeBlanc raced to another third place finish in their flight with a time of 7:03.52. They were only .9 seconds off of Temple and 2 seconds off of Loyola!

The Men’s Varsity 8 was the next boat to race for Ithaca in the Men’s Collegiate Varsity 8 Flight. They raced to a gold medal in the second flight with a time of 6:10.62, beating out crews from NY Maritime, Penn State, Villanova and Loyola! The Men’s JV 8 raced next in the Men’s Collegiate JV 8 flight. They raced to a third place finish with a time of 6:36.87! The Men’s Frosh/Novice entries then took to the water to race in the Frosh/Novice 8 Flights. The Ithaca “B” entry finished third in their flight with a time of 7:55.12! In the next flight the Ithaca “A” entry raced to another gold medal with a time of 6:31.28 beating crews from NY Maritime, Marietta and Villanova! In the final race of the day for Ithaca, the Men’s Varsity Lightweight 8 entry raced in the Bill Braxton Memorial Cup. Even though it was only a two boat race, the Lightweight Boat raced in a very close race against the NY Maritime lightweight 8! In the final 500 meters, the lightweight boat executed a great sprint, winning the race by seven seats to take home the Bill Braxton Memorial Cup!

Overall it was a great way for Ithaca Men’s Crew to finish of their fall season! Taking home four gold medals from the weekend was a great accomplishment and it built some good momentum going into winter training. The countdown to Georgia begins.
