November 20, 2014
Ithaca College was excited to announce publicly on Thursday, November 20 that Meghan Musnicki was chosen to deliver the 2015 Ithaca College Commencement Address, scheduled for May 17, 2015! Meghan graduated Ithaca College in 2005 with a degree in psychology, and while rowing for the Bombers, helped Ithaca win back-to-back NCAA D3 National Championships! She was inducted into the Ithaca College Athletic Hall of Fame in 2013. Musnicki also rowed for the United States National Rowing Team in the 2012 London Olympic Games and helped the United States Women’s 8 win the Gold Medal! She has also won Four World Championship Titles in the Women’s 8 in 2010 (Karapiro), 2011 (Lake Bled), 2013 (Chungju) and in 2014 (Amsterdam)!
“Meghan offers our graduating seniors a shining example of the value of hard work, persistence and commitment to the success of a team,” said Tom Rochon, President of Ithaca College.
Following her graduation from Ithaca College, Musnicki continued her rowing training while also preparing for Nursing School. After not being immediately chosen to train full time with the National Team, she continued to attend Selection Camps and to train hard. The hard work and determination paid off when she was offered a spot in the United States Women’s 8 in 2010! She has since won four World Championship Events and a Gold Medal in the London Olympic Games. On top of those achievements she also helped the 2012 United States Women’s 8 row to a World Record!
Jonathan Cummings, Co-President of the 2015 Senior Class commented on the selection by saying, “Meghan exemplifies what it means to have true commitment to excellence, and we are proud to have her deliver the Commencement Address to our Senior Class.” Mia Obrien, Co-President of the 2015 Senior Class also commented saying, “Having met Meghan when she was inducted into the athletic hall of fame, I have seen first hand her willingness to share advice and support the IC Family. Not only is she a young alumna who can offer tangible, immediate advice to to seniors, but through her athletic career and being a second generation Ithaca College Student herself, she truly understands what it means to be a Bomber.”
Musnicki and her family have been a big part of Ithaca Crew. In 2005, Ithaca Crew dedicated the Bill Musnicki III ’75, in honor of her late father. Also, following her Olympic Gold Medal victory in London, Musnicki attended the open house and dedication of the brand new Ward Romer Boathouse and Robert B. Tallman Rowing Center, where she signed autographs and posed for pictures with rowers and their families with her Gold Medal.
Meghan is a huge inspiration for all Ithaca Crew athletes, both old and new. Her drive and dedication to reach the top level of rowing is something that should be appreciated and valued by all rowers. It shows that you do not need to be an athlete competing at a well known D1 program to earn a spot on the National Team. She has represented Ithaca College Crew extremely well, and all Ithaca College Crew athletes are extremely proud of everything that she has been able to accomplish. It is truly an honor to have her deliver the Commencement Address, and all Ithaca College Seniors, athlete or not, will value what she has to say.
