Ithaca Crews head for Spring Break Training!

The Ithaca Crews look forward to the end of this week and the beginning of Spring Break Training in Gainesville, Georgia, on Lake Lanier at the ’96 Atlanta Olympics Rowing venue. Ithaca, and several other programs, are hosted by the Lake Lanier Rowing Club (contact is John Morrison 770-287-0077). Ithaca lodging will be at the Guesthouse/Lanier Inn & Suites, 520 Queen City Parkway, Gainesville, GA 30501,

The Spring Break itinerary has the team boarding the buses at the conclusion of classes this Friday, heading south on I-81 through Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia and Virginia. There will be a change of busdrivers in Virginia, then continuing on until I-77 south, and crossing into North Carolina. Nearing Charlotte, they follow west on the I-485 belt, and then to south/west on I-85. This continues into South Carolina and then into Georgia. From I-85, at exit 137 for Rt. 129, the route exits toward Gainesville. Approaching Gainesville, the route takes a left exit from Rt.129 onto I-985 north and follows this to one exit north, #24. At this exit, turn left (Jesse Jewell Rd), proceed to turn right a couple lights later for Limestone Parkway (Rt. 129). Follow Limestone to the traffic light at Clarks Bridge Road (Ga Rt. 284), turn right. Follow Clarks Bridge Road and after crossing the bridge, the Olympic Race Course will be on the right, and the Boathouse, parking and park area will be on the left.

Arrival time is scheduled for 11am on Saturday.

The crews will unload equipment, rig and clean shells, with a brief shakedown row Saturday afternoon around 2:30 before heading for the hotel for check-in. Route from the Boathouse to the hotel follows Clarks Bridge Road back to a left on Limestone, and then back to Jesse Jewell Rd, turning right to head into the city. At Queen City Parkway, turn left and the Guest Lodge will be immediately on the right.

The team will have two meals a day at the Brenau College dining. Double session practices will begin Sunday morning. General (weather-dependent!) schedules for the week run as follows:
Women’s Crew – rows 7:30-10am, followed by brunch at 10:45, then rowing 3 – 5pm, followed by dinner at 5:45pm
Men’s Crew – rows 7:55 – 10:30am, followed by brunch at 11:10, then rowing 3:30 – 5:30pm, followed by dinner at 6:10 pm

On Wednesday, weather-dependent, both crews will have somewhat longer morning rows, with later lunch-times, and the afternoon off. Hopefully there will be a team picnic for the afternoon.
Friday’s schedule may be adjusted to accommodate potential scrimmages with other crews practicing on Lanier for the week. Saturday’s final practice will be one morning session, with breakfast and hotel checkout, then return to the boathouse for final trailer loading and buses departing around 2pm to retrace the route back to Ithaca. The team should be back in Ithaca mid-morning on Sunday.

Crew News

Greetings Ithaca Crew Alumni, Parents and Friends! The Ithaca Crews are winding up their winter training, with less than two weeks to go before Spring Break Training in Gainesville, Georgia. The Ithaca winter (so far!) has been relatively mild and the inlet is currently ice free, but is suspect to icing over on cold mornings, and is at very low level, leaving our docks unusable at present. So the Crews will maintain their land workouts and expect returning water levels for mid-March after Spring Break.

Last January 29, the Crews completed a very successful Row-For-Humanity/Crew Ergathon fundraiser, keeping 8 ergometers spinning all day in the Campus Center. Each team member completed a 30 minute stint and the subsequent pledges are nearing $30,000, with $5000 designated toward the IC Habitat for Humanity chapter. Special THANKS to all those who pledged their support!

Two Ithaca Crew groups competed in the Concept2 January Virtual Team Challenge, which consisted of 566 teams from around the world. Team members logged in their daily meters on the Concept2 website. The Ithaca Crew Alumni team had 28 members and finished 31st overall with a total of 4,836,412 meters, led by Alex Lynn, Tom Pfaff, and team captain Erik Frid (each over ½ million meters). This group also finished 8th of 63 teams in the team size bracket of 21-50, smallest team in the top 10 with the 4th highest average. Team ExtraOARdinary, consisting of 34 current Crew members, finished with nearly 4 million meters in 45th place overall. They were led by Hunter Flamm, Karina Feitner, Savannah Brija, Pearl Outlaw, Allison Ritting and Sierra Keat, all logging over 200,000 meters. They finished 19th in the same 21-50 bracket.

Concept 2 Holiday Challenge

Holiday Greetings to Ithaca Crew!

Ithaca Crew members alumni, and friends who may be entering “winter training” on the ergometer may be interested in tracking their progress using the Concept 2 logbook, where they can record their daily meters. Set one up using the Logbook link on the Concept2 website or this link  Online Logbook home page .

In addition, Concept 2 has offered a Holiday Challenge – those who can accumulate 100 k or more in their logbook during the Challenge dates 11/23 – 12/24 can trigger a Concept 2 contribution to one of four charities:

Puerto Rico/Caribbean Hurricane Relief Fund, Climate Reality Project, Union of Concerned Scientists, or Vermont Refugee Resettlement Program. You can select one when signing up for the challenge on your Logbook page.

Cheers to all for the Holidays!
